The Two Half-Days

The summer heat had already tired out, and its stroke was overwhelmed by the autumn gale in the morning. That day, I had to pass through the crowds swarming Toopkhaneh Square along Ferdowsi Avenue to get to work at the newspaper office.

We were cut off guard; we were not prepared for such a war at its onset

Residents of border areas would hear sounds from borders all their life and sometimes these sounds were repeated for so long that no one could even foresee the onset of a war. First days of war narrated by a woman who was born and raised in Abadan are described as follows: we were in shock and perplexity, with sounds coming from the other side of the border, a war started and continued for 8 years in violence and brutality.

Many authors have written about the memoirs of the eight-year Iraqi imposed war against Iran. The war had showed its bitter image not only in the western and southwestern cities and villages of Iran but also had forced men and women to defend their home.

On the one hand, our land and honor was invaded, and at the other hand, accompanying with my neighborhood friends, with whom I was in the same revolutionary range and all of us adhered to the system. Accordingly, we went to the front along together.

Samad came back home a month later. This time he wanted to stay in Hamadan for two weeks. Unlike before, he himself realized that I was pregnant. Seeing my discomfort, he said: “These things shouldn’t make you upset. You should be very happy. God hasn’t given an incurable disease, but he has granted blessing. We must be grateful. Come on, get ready, we want to celebrate.”

He himself dressed babies. He even readied Somayeh and said: “You also get ready. We want to go to the market.”
