MODESTO — Traditional Cambodian instruments and music took the spotlight as part of a month long art and culture exhibit at the Peer Recovery Art Project in downtown Modesto. The exhibit concludes next weekend with dancing, oral history and a Hawk Fight Academy demonstration of Khmer martial arts, said music organizer Pholy Meas. The showcase, titled “The Cambodian American Experience,” is hosted by Khmer Youth of Modesto, a local nonprofit organization. “It is the goal of the group to nurture the positive growth of the Khmer Youth, which includes preservation of history, tradition and customs,” said Mao Khuth, organization president. “The cultural display will be an opportunity to expose to a larger audience the many art forms unique to the Khmer culture.” Art featured in the gallery includes poetry, sketches by local Cambodian-American artists, paintings from Cambodia, traditional clothing and textiles. Throughout the month, the exhibit has featured poetry readings and cultural dance performances with Cambodian-American youth from Modesto and surrounding communities.
