Revolution Key in Understanding Iran Demography

صفحه نخست شماره 195

“The Islamic Revolution and the demography of the people who formed it must be studied for understanding the demography of Iran”, said a senior Iranian cultural official.
Moahmmad Beheshti, who is head of the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Research Center (CHTRC), said: “the significance of the revolution’s demography becomes manifest when one begins to ask themselves why people need to be studied.”
Addressing the Revolution Demography seminar held here in Tehran at the CHTRC, Beheshti said the Islamic revolution is a perfect reflection of the Iranian society’s cultural level, and therefore it is an unparalleled resource for conducting cultural studies about Iranians.
He argued that the study of demography is in fact registration of social and cultural behaviors of a given nations which leads to gaining a profound understanding of them. “The issue of the revolution, given its nature and dimensions, is a good opportunity for studying the culture of a society. A revolution is among a few social incidents that help the understanding of people,” he said.
“This is always the case in most of revolutions in history that people, as the primary elements that form revolutions, are prepared to offer whatever they have including their lives and properties for the success of their causes,” said Ahmad Tabatabaei, another speaker of the seminar and an advisor to the CHTRC chief.
“Golestan Palace and its treasuries as well as other cultural spots in the country were not at all damaged by revolutionaries amidst the turmoil in Iran,” added he, saying this was not new to Iranians as they have shown the same respect for cultural spots all throughout history.
He said, for example, during the US invasion of Iraq, all the country’s major museums were invaded by the people and all the treasuries were plundered while such behavior has never seen from Iranians in history.
