Florida Frontiers: Author captured diverse oral histories

Author and activist Stetson Kennedy celebrates the 2009 reprint of his 1942 book 'Palmetto Country' with Florida Historical Society executive director Ben Brotemarkle at the Library of Florida History in Cocoa. / PHOTOS FOR FLORIDA TODAY Carrying a cumbersome audio recorder that he called “the thing,” Stetson Kennedy traveled through rural backwoods, swamps and small towns from north Florida to Key West, collecting oral histories, folktales and work songs. He spoke with the diverse people of Florida, including Cracker cowmen, Seminole Indians, Greek sponge divers, African-American turpentine still workers and Latin cigar rollers. The result of Stetson Kennedy’s trek through Florida’s multicultural communities was the classic 1942 book “Palmetto Country.”

In memoriam: Kim Lacy Rogers

Kim Lacy Rogers, a leading figure in oral history, died unexpectedly on Friday, February 21, at her home in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where she was Professor of History and American Studies at Dickinson College. Although continuing to teach, she had been in declining health. She was a few days shy of her 63rd birthday. Soon after receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1983, Kim Rogers began authoring what would become an extremely influential collection of oral history-related books and articles. Much of her research involved African American communities in the Deep South, particularly in New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta. Along with Professor Jerry Ward of Tougaloo College, she directed the Delta Oral History Project, conducting oral history interviews from 1995 through 1998.

Ramadan in Hospital

It was about five months that I had been bedridden in Shahrbani Hospital. It was getting closer to Ramadan that SAVAK asked the hospital to afford the arrangements for my transference to prison. The hospital advised that I still needed more treatments and I had to stay there more. They said it was enough if I could stay by a crane. I understood what they wanted. I was sad that their decision was going to happen at the brink of Ramadan. I asked God to do me a favor and keep me there another month. I wanted to fast relaxingly. I knew that outside the hospital I would be tortured and even executed.
